Officially the District of Columbia and usually called Washington, the District, or D.C, is the capital of the US, set up on July sixteen, 1790. The City of Washington was originally a separate municipality in the Territory of Columbia till an act of Congress in 1871 effectively combined the Town and the Territory into a single entity called the District of Columbia. It is for that reason the town, while legally named the District of Columbia, is commonly known as Washington, D.C. The town is found on the north bank of the Potomac Stream and is bordered by the states of Virginia to the southwest and Maryland to the other sides.
The Washington Urban Area, of which the District is a part, has a population of 5.3 million, the ninth-largest urban area in the country.
Article One of the US Constitution makes provisions for a Fed. district, distinct from the states, to serve as the permanent countrywide capital.
The centers of all 3 branches of the government of the US are found in the District, as are several of the state’s monuments and museums. Washington, D.C, hosts 174 foreign consulates as well as the headquarters of the planet Bank, the Global Financial Fund ( IMF ), the Organization of Yank States ( OAS ), the Inter-American Development Bank, and the Pan Yank Health Organization ( PAHO ).
